Imagine if every light in the world had intelligence. If streetlights and building lights were equipped with sensors and connected, there would be an incredible amount of real-time and historical data that could unlock the potential to make the world intelligent.
From improving community safety to reducing parking gridlock and even recognizing pedestrian patterns, there’s no shortage of urban insights to be gained by using live traffic data streamed from outdoor streetlights. And with data from indoor lights, businesses can provide better experiences for their employees and patrons. This is the ultimate goal of the Intelligent Environments services on GE’s Predix platform — to help cities and businesses enhance everyday life through insights and solutions built with real-time sensor data.
In the Intelligent World Hackathon, you’ll be one of the first developers to leverage and build Industrial Internet of Things applications powered by the Predix platform. You’ll get free access to GE’s real-world datasets, Predix catalog services, engineering support, and developer resources for the life of the hackathon.
How could an app using live data from LED sensors in your city help solve problems with traffic, parking, public safety, urban planning, or retail and building management?

One application may be submitted per team/submitter. This hackathon is open to:
- Individuals (who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry)
- Teams of eligible individuals
- Organizations (up to 50 employees)
Residents and organizations of the following countries/regions are not eligible: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, China, Russia, Brazil, Quebec, and Italy.
Employees of GE, Devpost, and contractors currently employed by GE or Devpost are not eligible.
Software partners and those receiving funding or assistance from GE for application development are not eligible. Any application that is or was funded or compensated, partially or fully, by GE for its development is not eligible for entry.
Main Requirement: Build and submit apps on GE’s Predix platform. App submissions must use:
- at least two (2) Intelligent Environment services from EITHER the Enterprise (indoor) OR Cities (outdoor) options listed on the Predix IO catalog; AND
- at least one (1) additional GE Predix service from any service category on the Predix IO catalog.
NOTE: To be eligible for the Grand Prize, submissions must include one or more of the Intelligent Environment Cities services: Traffic Planning, Parking Planning, Pedestrian Planning, or Public Safety.
Content: Submitted apps should address problems that intelligent lighting and its sensors can help solve in either indoor or outdoor environments.
Platform: Submissions must be a web browser app (either mobile or desktop). All submissions must include an active URL where the app is deployed. [Note that apps may NOT be published on IBM, Amazon, Salesforce, or any other non-Predix platforms. Submitters may utilize services from these or other vendors, but they must not publish their submitted applications publicly on these or any other non-Predix platform.]
Categories: Submissions must be entered into one of the following categories. Category definitions can be found on the Categories page.
- Traffic and/or Parking
- Public Safety
- Pedestrian Planning
- Intelligent Buildings (Commercial or Retail)
New/Existing Applications: Both new and existing apps may be submitted, as long as the submitter and app adhere to all other requirements. Please note that all apps must not rely on technology that has not yet been announced or introduced to the market.
Submit the following assets:
- A demo video (hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, or Youku). Your video should include a screencast demo of your working application via a step-by-step visual demo.
- Images. Please submit at least one image/screenshot of your application.
- A way to access your working web application for judging and testing by providing an active URL where your app is deployed.

- Build your app & shoot your demo screencast video.
- Provide Devpost access to your app for judging and testing by including an active URL where your app is deployed.
- Make sure your entry adheres to all the requirements and submit on IntelligentWorld.Devpost.com before 5pm ET on August 2, 2016.

Potential Value or Benefits
Includes the degree to which the solution provides scale and value — either economic or social — to a city or retail/commercial building.
Use of Additional Predix Platform Services
Includes the extent to which additional (more than the three required services) Predix, Intelligent Cities, or Building Services were used AND/OR the extent to which live data was incorporated from a Predix machine-enabled device.
Ease of implementation
Includes the extent to which the value provided to the end user is realistically achievable with existing technologies within the near term; not vague or overly complex to user, or reliant on a technology that is not yet on the market.
Pitch of App
Includes the clarity and description of the problem addressed, how the app solves the problem, what technology is used, what Predix services are leveraged, what sensor and other data is used, and the connection the app makes to real-world problems.
