Building cities with a digital infrastructure

Welcome to the Intelligent World Hackathon from Current, powered by GE! You’re one of the first software developers to get access to the Intelligent Environment services with real-world data and GE’s Industrial Internet platform, Predix.

As the Chief Digital Officer of Current, powered by GE, one of my top priorities is making every city an intelligent city. Over the past year, we’ve been working to transform the lighting network of cities and buildings into core digital infrastructure to unlock endless possibilities for a new kind of civic engagement.

Configuring cities with an all-knowing LED network equipped with sensors and software creates an open infrastructure, making real-time data actionable to drive solutions for citizens and build economic development. Networks of LED streetlights capture important data about pedestrian activity, traffic flow and congestion, parking availability, air quality and weather, and other insights. In a retail environment, LEDs could “talk” to shoppers’ smartphones and send a personalized greeting or special offer based on past purchases. In a manufacturing plant, intelligent lighting could use its bird's-eye vantage point to track forklifts and foreign objects to reduce accidents and slip-and-fall incidents. And that’s just the beginning of the vast opportunities.

Startups and enterprise businesses are already using the Predix platform to help GE Digital build the Industrial Internet. Now, we’re inviting independent developers like you to use the Predix platform to transform your urban innovation brainstorms into market-ready applications.

Harness the Predix platform’s immense analytical power to gain data insights from intelligent LED streetlight sensors and build apps that make cities smarter — by addressing urban issues including public safety, traffic and parking, intelligent buildings, and pedestrian planning.

Thank you for joining the Intelligent World Hackathon. We can’t wait to see what you’ll contribute to the Industrial Internet revolution.
